Weep for the Iraqi people

Fri Feb 15, 2008 at 11:57:21 AM PDT

US Compares 9/11 Trials to Nuremberg
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Bush administration has instructed U.S. diplomats abroad to defend its decision to seek the death penalty for six Guantanamo Bay detainees accused in the Sept. 11 terror attacks by recalling the executions of Nazi war criminals after World War II.
[...]
The unclassified cable was sent by the State Department to all U.S. diplomatic missions worldwide late on Monday.

Difference in scale:
9/11 suspects condemned by dubious evidence obtained through torture and long confinement are accused of almost 3,000 murders.

Nuremberg suspects were condemned by a mountain of evidence, obtained by their own documentation and eye witness victims, were accused of 6,000,000 murders.

US Jeered and Booed in Bali

Sat Dec 15, 2007 at 10:30:34 PM PDT

The United States was forced to come on board with a Bali compromise after all the other countries united against the US. That left Canada isolated and forced to come on board too.
Our Canadian Minister of the Environment, Mr. Baird was a lonely, miserable failure.

Joan Baez banned at Walter Reed Hospital

Mon May 14, 2007 at 03:13:39 PM PDT

This diary is an email from my brother, a Vietnam vet. He lives on the other side of the line, in the USA, I live in Canada and we banter back and forth. He is my main reason for being interested in US politics. This is about Joan Baez:

"16 Steps to a Healthier Life"

Tue May 01, 2007 at 01:50:12 PM PDT

This is a list from Breast Cancer Options

I have been doing a lot of searching since my diagnosis of breast cancer in January of this year. This list seems to summarize other information I have found. My life-style was low-risk for breast cancer and yet...

The question remains in my mind, could I have been more careful? I believe that a year of stress ending in an emotional family crisis was the door that opened the way for cancer in my case. That information however is not in my medical chart.

Will Cheney be disinvited to Brigham Young?

Mon Apr 02, 2007 at 05:10:14 PM PDT

April 2, 2007
PROVO, Utah - Some students and faculty on one of the nation’s most conservative campuses want Brigham Young University to withdraw an invitation for Vice President Dick Cheney to speak at commencement later this month.
Cheney may face tough crowd at graduation

Oh, Cheney is so funny. Here he is at the Press Dinner for President:

He took a few lighthearted jabs at his predecessor, noting that former Vice President Al Gore’s house uses an above-average amount of energy. "Many argue that global warming is manmade," Cheney said, "and it looks like they found the man."

Great Lakes, Free Fire Zones?

Fri Nov 10, 2006 at 07:22:03 PM PDT

The Coast Guard has conducted 24 live-fire weapons training exercises across the Great Lakes since January, firing machine guns, rifles and 9 mm guns unnecessarily -- endangering fishermen, ferry boats, sailors and small boats using the lakes. It's a disaster waiting to happen.

LaCross Tribune

The US Coast Guard wants 34 more massive live fire zones which will drop seven thousand pounds (Coast Guard figure) of lead pellets into the Great Lakes. They argue that these live fire exercises are necessary practice as a defense against terrorism.  And yet experts have warned us that environmental degredation, global warming and climate change are more of a threat than international terrorism.

What's Condi Doing Today?

Mon Sep 11, 2006 at 12:40:44 PM PDT

She's on a state visit to Canada, the east coast, Halifax to thank the people for taking in grounded American airline passengers on 9/11.

Halifax was one of a number of communities in Atlantic Canada that hosted 21,000 passengers after air traffic was shut down over the United States in the wake of the attacks.

But some Haligonians are not buying it, they think that she is there to get more Canadian troops into the slaughter that is now going on in Afghanistan.

Global Warming Closes Small Town in Canada

Wed Aug 30, 2006 at 10:05:04 AM PDT

Small town Tofino in northern Vancouver Island, BC has to close up after two months without rain. The well is dry.

Actually it was greed and poorly planned development that led to this water shortage. Invite a million tourists to your small town to drink all your water, fill the hotel swimming pools, water the golf courses and what would you exptect?

During the high months of the summer vacation season, Tofino more than triples its permanent population of 1,700.

Israel Bombs Refugee Convoy

Fri Aug 11, 2006 at 08:46:20 PM PDT

This was described in detail on CNN by a correspondent who was with the convoy. Voice shaking, he said the bombing was "relentless." Some news reports state the convoy was hit with 5 bombs, 6 dead, 16 wounded, others claim 12 dead and the death toll is rising. Convoys were given safe passage but this one got lost at a juncture and separated from the main one. The story is not getting much attention since the brief CNN report.
From Adelaide Now:
The attack came 30 km northeast of Hasbaya, and the victims were mostly civilians, police said.
Three Lebanese army vehicles were hit and set ablaze, they added. Several civilian vehicles were also struck.
Jib Jannin is 35 km northeast of Marjayun, and Kefraya is 7 km northwest of Jib Jannin.

plant could rival the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster that
ravaged the Alaskan coast, a UN agency says.

Witness:'15-yr old's head smashed with a concrete block'

Thu Jul 06, 2006 at 10:46:35 AM PDT

The story has been told, but this is an Iraqi witness' account of first arriving at the farm house where the rape of a 15 year Iraqi girl took place.  Abu Firas Janabi, a farmer who lived nearby relates how he came upon the burning home, March 12, 2006. He could see the bodies of the family inside.

He wonders why 3 months have elapsed since that day when he found two school boys, sons of the murder victims standing outside their burning home, weeping. Three months before an investigation is underway into the atrocity. He is told that a soldier has confessed and the US Military wants to know the truth.

Steven D. Green, charged, 4 others involved.

There was NO 'Bombs Away"

Fri Mar 17, 2006 at 02:12:41 PM PDT

From Back to Iraq
(Digression: Just to clear some things up, "air assault" does not equal air strikes. There are no JDAMs being dropped, and there are no fixed-wing aircraft involved at all, except maybe for surveillance. An air assault is the 101st Airborne's way of inserting troops into a battlespace. There is so far no evidence of bombardment of any kind. Also, it's a telling example of how "well" things are going in Iraq that after three years, the U.S. is still leading the fight and conducting sweeps in an area that has been swept/contained/pacfied/cleared five or six times since 2004. How long before the U.S. has to come back again?)
