Torture spotlight just in time for the election

Sat Feb 23, 2008 at 07:15:40 PM PDT

Back in January, Bill in Portland Maine threw out a cheer to catch the movie Taxi to the Dark Side which had opened in theaters. This movie examines the death of that Afghani taxi driver in 2002 at Bagram air base.

Well, ThinkProgress  is informing us that HBO plans to air this movie in September.  Let's discuss it's impact on the election on the flip...

Come on Spaghetti Monster!

Fri Nov 16, 2007 at 06:36:06 AM PDT

This is hilarious!

Flying Spaghetti Monsterism is thriving.  So much so that there will be a panel discussion on FSM at the American Academy of Religion conference in San Diego this weekend.

Fred Thompson compared to Reagan

Fri Jun 22, 2007 at 08:05:49 AM PDT

There have been a few posts over the last couple of months about how the R's are looking at Thompson as the second coming of Reagan.  Today, I got the forwarded message below from my conservative sister & brother-in-law in KY repeating that frame.  It is a letter by Bruce Walker that apparently was posted to the web back in March bu written a couple of months prior to that.  I didn't see this anywhere in the Fred Thompson-tagged diaries, so if it's already been discussed just say so and I'll take it down. Today is "spying on the internet" day

Mon May 14, 2007 at 03:00:44 PM PDT

Since the open thread mentioned Salon's coverage of PBS's "Spying on the home front", I thought I'd mention that today (May 14th) is being referred to as "Spying on the Internet" day.

PBS appears to just be covering the spying topic from the FISA/warrantless NSA surveillance program perspective. But the expansion of the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA) is an enabler for much more than just listening in on phone conversations.

May 14th is the official deadline for cable modem companies, DSL providers, broadband over powerline, satellite internet companies and some universities to finish wiring up their networks with FBI-friendly surveillance gear, to comply with the FCC's expanded interpretation of the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act.

Verizon and the "freedom of speech" defense?

Tue May 08, 2007 at 08:15:07 AM PDT

Can't say I saw this one coming...

Verizon has requested that the legal case against them for disclosing phone records to the government be thrown out on... get this... free speech grounds!

NC residents getting lucky re: Diebold?

N.C. Judge Declines Protection for Diebold

All states should at least be following NC's lead requiring voting machine code to be placed in escrow.

One of the nation's leading suppliers of electronic voting machines may decide against selling new equipment in North Carolina after a judge declined Monday to protect it from criminal prosecution should it fail to disclose software code as required by state law.

Trusted Logic Voting Systems

Fri Sep 16, 2005 at 06:55:38 AM PDT

I participate in various computer industry standards. One major organization where such work takes place is The "Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards" or OASIS.

I haven't participated in this particular work group (called a Technical Committee), but they've been creating the "Election Markup Language" (EML).  Their charter starts with the goal:

To develop a standard for the structured interchange of data among hardware, software, and service providers who engage in any aspect of providing election or voter services to public or private organizations.

Info on their work can be found here.

They've just put version 4 of EML out for a public review in preparation to get it standardized.

AP: Weldon: Atta Papers Destroyed on Orders

Thu Sep 15, 2005 at 08:45:50 PM PDT

http://apnews.excite.com/article/20050916/D8CL3NE02.html

The fact-finding into Able Danger appears to be making progress...

A Pentagon employee was ordered to destroy documents that identified Mohamed Atta as a terrorist two years before the 2001 attacks, a congressman said Thursday.

The employee is prepared to testify next week before the Senate Judiciary Committee and was expected to identify the person who ordered him to destroy the large volume of documents, said Rep. Curt Weldon, R-Pa.

It's reported that it was more than 2.5 terabytes of info!

Tie DSM back to "UBL is still alive"

Wed Jun 15, 2005 at 11:21:56 AM PDT

Of course the REAL reason why DSM is SO important is that all Americans must be made to understand that Bushco lied to get America to support starting another war while the most important war was cut short.  We've never  served justice on the man responsible for the lives lost on 9/11.

The result of the Bushco lies as portrayed in the DSM is that our country was intentionally steered from completing the REAL task of wiping out the Taliban and killing or capturing bin Laden.

Today, the AP reports that he's alive and well.

It is all so depressing and insulting...

Decline in Moral Values on the Internet

Wed Apr 06, 2005 at 06:04:24 AM PDT

Be kind - this is my first diary. And apologies in advance to non-techies for the techno-babble...

I'm outraged! How dare they!

The right wing has infiltrated the ranks of those that define and build the protocols that make up this infrastructure we call the internet. And they want to force their morality requirements into the internet itself.

I'm probably close to breaking the rules, but I wanted to highlight a few "important" snippets from this internet RFC.

Moral Values and other ramblings

Wed Nov 03, 2004 at 06:00:47 AM PDT

A vast majority of the country listed moral values as their top issue.  Supposedly, 80% of those voted for Bush.

HOW IN HELL can one of the most IMMORAL administrations in our history win (assuming current CW is right about the results)?

Lots of people in blogosphere are blaming it on gays push for equality. Unbelieveable. Saying things like that is immoral.  Assuming no miracle occurs, we didn't lose because of the push for some measure of equality.  We lose (assuming no miracle) because of...
